Introduction
Tucked away in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas, Yamunotri Dham stands as the sacred origin of the Yamuna River. Known as the sister of Yama (the God of Death), Goddess Yamuna is believed to grant salvation and protect her devotees from untimely death. The shrine is traditionally the first destination in the sacred Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage, setting a serene, introspective tone for the spiritual journey ahead.
Spiritual Significance
According to ancient Hindu mythology, bathing in the cold waters of the Yamuna River at Yamunotri cleanses devotees of all their sins and secures a peaceful transition after death. Legend holds that Sage Asit, who spent his life bathing in both Ganga and Yamuna, resided here. In his old age, when he could no longer travel to Gangotri, a stream of Ganga miraculously emerged right next to Yamunotri for him.
