The Sacred Snout of GangesThe Origin of River Ganges & Abode of Goddess Ganga. Nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi, Gangotri is directly accessible by road. It is surrounded by beautiful pine and deodar forests, making it one of the most scenic and peaceful shrines of the yatra.

Introduction
Gangotri Dham, nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the second stop on the traditional Char Dham pilgrimage. Surrounded by towering deodar and pine trees, and framed by majestic peaks, it is one of the most stunning and easily accessible Himalayan shrines. Here, Goddess Ganga is worshipped in her calm, serene earthly presence.
Spiritual Significance
The spiritual core of Gangotri centers around the descent of River Ganga from heaven to earth. Mythological accounts describe that King Bhagirath performed thousands of years of severe penance at Gangotri to please Goddess Ganga, aiming to liberate the souls of his ancestors. To contain Ganga's immense cosmic impact, Lord Shiva caught the rushing torrent in his locks before releasing her gently as the Bhagirathi River.
