Introduction

Kedarnath Dham is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Hinduism. Perched near the Mandakini River and surrounded by the dramatic snow-laden Kedarnath and Kedar Dome peaks, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple's majestic architecture and its miraculous survival during the devastating 2013 floods add a profound layer of awe and devotion to this high-altitude sanctuary.

Spiritual Significance

According to the Mahabharata, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to atone for the sins of killing their relatives in the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, wishing to avoid them, took the form of a bull and hid in the ground at Kedarnath. When Bhima spotted him and tried to catch him, Shiva dove into the earth, leaving his hump on the surface, which has been worshipped here ever since as the triangular Jyotirlinga.
